Greater Detroit Soaring &

Michigan Soaring League Final
2006
Contest Director Report-W. Hutchings
The Addison Oaks GDSHS field was ready for action,
thanks to Rob Coffee and his staff.
The winches and retrievers/lines were checked, and
double-checked by Richard Stratton, Mike Wade, and Ken Rogus.
The shed was cleaned and checked by Joe Schnur
and Mike Holmes.
“Wolf,” ordered food: Wolfgang Ludwig.
Safety was assured by Steve Martinez.
Scoring equipment (batteries and pencils) readied by
Rodger Van Elslander.
All we needed was RC Sailplane pilots on Saturday,
September 16, 2006.
And they came.
Nineteen pilots were present to end the MSL season
at our home field at Addison Oaks. Team
GDSHS were present at 8:00 AM to set winches in the direction of the wind.
No Wind!
Cool and overcast, low level soup.
We decided on a South setup, with landings a little cross wind, but with
no wind, and excellent pilots, Steve felt it would be safe.
Pilots were arriving. Harry DeBoer and Larry Jeffries were there,
practicing for the next weekend in the Masters of Soaring in Muncie. Cal Posthuma was unable to attend and
defend his position for 2006, assuring Mike Stump the MSL 1st
place.
Three classes were flown: Unlimited (16 flyers), Two
meter (10) and RES (11).
A four round contest, with tasks of 4-6-8-10 minutes
and LARGE landing tapes to 60 points.
Later, pilots were asked if they wanted a 5th round, it being
only 2:30 PM. No 5th round
was flown.
Wolf and Don prepped the Brauts with chips,
pickles and sauerkraut for lunch. John
Ferguson and Wolf put on a Patriotic flying routine, a favorite of mine
and I think all of the flyers enjoyed it.
That Stryker, by the way, can go vertical to 1000 feet in 15 seconds.
It was a difficult day to fly. The sun, predicted to appear at 1:00 PM,
never came. It was even soupy in the
early afternoon for high launches.
Clearly, the big AVA’s of Dennis Hoyle and Harry (a
Super) were at an advantage. Launch
high, fly smooth, range to good air, and get lucky. Conditions could have been worse, as you will remember past years
were cold, windy, and just unpleasant.
John Winstanley (Downwindstanley) had the unfortunate luck of
loosing site of his plane for a moment, low and far away, downwind. Ken Shaw had a receiver battery short
in the ZOOM at launch. Bill Pates
went into the pocket deep with an older Oly II on a Wade winch. Steve timed Bill’s Monokote at
10 minutes; Mike Holmes had the stab at 3 minutes. Lou was a player, but on landing, hit
himself for a 0 in that round.
Nice pilots, good help, good equipment, and nice
field, filling lunch and drinks, decent weather: Can’t find a better way to
spend the day. Thanks for coming and
enjoying our contest.
