August 2007 Club Contest
Results
This was a makeup contest because of the rainout last month at the MISS Club event.
Hutch called three, six-minute rounds with 100-point tapes.
This contest was run after the September contest and the air was really a challenge. If you did not hook up (I think only Hutch hooked up with the beer cooler at least once), it was do a dozen low level thermals and eek out the six-minute maxes, it was low level thermal flying at it’s best and really fun. It was beautiful all day and one would have thought lift would be abundant, but not so causing a high percentage of two-minute flights.
Hutch and I were the only ones to come close to maxes all three rounds as you can see from the scores.
The funny thing is about an hour after the contest was over, when we were sport flying, the wind calmed down and the sky went up. I played in lift for about 20 minutes doing loops, rolls, inverted and just plain flying from corner to corner of the field without loosing altitude. It would have made fantastic air for an F3B distance run because you could hold a ton of down stick and rocket all over the sky.
The only thing was that in order to get to this lift zone, you had to catch air low and thermal into the layer of ‘whatever it was’ that kept the plane up there no matter what you did with the sticks. It looked like around 800 to 1000 feet to me but I did not have an altimeter in the plane, (need to get the Z-Log hooked up in the Supra for fun and games).
