2007 FE CLUB CONTEST
(MAKEUP DATE 14OC07)
Due to the very nice weather I did a note on our Yahoo Forum and invited all to come out and do a makeup contest. The weather was indeed very nice with almost no wind and very light lift under partly cloudy conditions and temps in the high 50’s to low 60’s.
As usual knowing I hate lottery contest I decided that even with 2-up, we would do a SMOM contest. What could we loose and it gave some of the guys a chance to see what MOM is all about.
Also four of us are going to the Pumpkin Fly in Cincinnati next weekend and this was a good chance to brush up on this format.
It was just a fun contest and we even allowed you to time yourself so more groups could be in the air at the same time. This works well with talking timers and you could go over the time without penalty and only the max time would be recorded. Landings were 100-point tapes and the landing score was calculated into the flight score before normalizing. This makes final scores a little tighter but not much.
Times were 8/12/12/12 and someone always maxed so they were good times to set. I decided not to go more than 12 because the air was good enough if you got high to stay up for a long time so more time was not going to separate any of the players. There did not seem to be cycles but a bunch of little thermals all around. You did have to range to get the one to take you up but you could stay above launch height by playing a lot of the little ones. I saw both techniques work.
It took a little courage to leave a small thermal to go look for the big one that could take you high and an auto-max but the little ones did play out quickly and you could be in early without a chance to range.
Corven and I ended up doing battle the last three rounds and it was fun. An AVA against a Supra, both very capable in this air and both had their strong points to use in battle. We were within a couple of points at the end of two but Dave landed 20 seconds early in the third to allow me to slip in a little buffer for the final round. We both maxed the final and I out landed him for the win. The first time this year that I was able to best Dave and keep him from a shutout with me.
Too bad the “Kid” was not here, he would have loved it but his dad Gerry did a very good job and took third. Gerry has to be one of the most improved contest flyers this year and is now always in the hunt with the old guard. Nice going Ger.
If we could only have days like today all of the winter weekends, it would be fantastic- just dreaming.
