When we arrived this morning, only four of us were there and Mike had set up the winch by 9:00 in anticipation of a big crowd, but maybe because of the holiday weekend a lot of the guy’s did not show. Several others showed up a little later so it was possible to have a legitimate contest.

Hutch played CD and called a 5,7,9 “call-it-when-you-land” contest with 100-point tapes. We all thought it was going to be a cakewalk all day because it was so beautiful with blue skies and minimal wind. Well it kind of was early on and the guy’s that launched late in round one got their 9’s on the first flight. The early launchers had to settle for 5’s and get the tougher flights in later rounds.

By the second round it got a little dicey and if you did not hook up right after launch, the chances of a max were greatly minimized. Of course you had to max all the rounds to enter the landing contest. At times the sink was so active, it looked like the plane was loaded with bricks it sank so fast.

I had a lot of fun helping Dick Stratton straighten out his plane and getting it to launch better without popping off. He was rewarded with three good flights and a second place. I think he was one happy camper.

Hutch and I just missed the air and got humbled.

We had a couple of new contest flyers this time, Barney and Roger joined in for at least one round of fun and games. I think both will continue to fly in the monthly competitions to build skill and be part of the fun. Roger had the misfortune of having a radio problem and smacking his beer-cooler in rather hard. As most beer-cooler are almost indestructible, this one will probably fly again.
