GDSHS February Make-up Contest
-Held October
12,2008-
Contest
Director: Mike (The Mystery Man) Wade
Mike Wade called Saturday, and predicted a beautiful Sunday for flying. He suggested a club make-up contest, and volunteered to CD. Dennis Kozak had already planned on an electric contest for Sunday morning. 10 flyers enjoyed a three round electric contest, and it was only 12:00 noon. The winch went out during the third round, Mike, with no fan-fair, called a three round, 10-minute precision contest, fly when you like and time yourself. Thirteen club members participated, and had fun.
No real drama for the three round sailplane contest. Dan Jackman got hung-up on the retriever line, but landed without mishap. Roger flew well with his EZ Glider, and was confident enough to try winching the plane himself. Gerry Marcicki, without his brother Jim, got a fourth, and had some challenging air, flown well.
Jack Iafret noticed that the lift was tight, and elusive, but was still able to garner a third place finish. The top flyer, Mike, with a Supra was not able to have three 10-minute flights. It was good to see Greg Nilsen flying, taking a fifth, and not getting much stick time in this summer.
Greg has been in
Disgruntled Employee in Training at GM for a few years, and it finally paid
off. Greg will be retired in a
month, and Jack and Rogus welcomed him to the ORF’s. (Old Retired
Fellows). Welcome, Greg.
Steve Martinez was flying a Larry Storie 3 meter Duck, and just could not get three maxes either. It was a tough day. John Ferguson took a day off from work, and flew the best result with a foam airplane, to seventh place. The foamies a riot, but admittedly have limitations in their capacity to compete with a Supra, for example.
Both John and I are currently waiting for Dave Corven to show up with his Carbon Sparred full pedal launcher, and distract him long enough to steal his carbon.
The surprised Dennis Kozak placed second with his Duck.
It was great having such interest in contest flying from our membership. The last two club contests have had thirteen entrants. For a club our size, that is an achievement. Also having members like Bruce, the two Bills, and Wolf and Charlie, show up to help is a real asset, and makes for a particularly pleasant club activity.
