The Greater Detroit Soaring and
Hiking Society
May 4th 2008 Club Contest
The weather was very sunny with clear blue skies. The wind was out of the west south west at about 10 to 15 mph and was sometimes gusty to an estimated to 15 mph.
Temps were predicted to be around 60 deg F but I’ll bet the temps got up to closer to 70 deg during the afternoon.
All in all, a very good day was enjoyed by 10 of our club members, which included recently returned Chris Corven and son Curtis who is beginning to fly with a DGL and an AVA.
Your venerable CD, yours truly, had selected a ladder format starting with a 3 min flight to start with and each subsequent flight an additional 2 min each. I.E 3 min, 5 min, 7 min 9 min 11 min and so on.
If you made your time you could go over without penalty but you had to make a landing to make the flight score count. No landing then you do the flight over until you get the landing to go with it.
Also the landing score, as measured, was carried along with the flight scores to break ties at the end.
The bottom line was that only 3 fliers made the 9 min flight and included Jack Iafret, Steve Martinez and Hutch. Today Hutch was a landing machine and therefore unbeatable.
Hutch was also a major pain as he continued to remind everyone how good he was today. And one of his many comments after the contest was ___________________________!
Got admit Hutch was on his game today and he deserved the win.
Scores as follows:
Hutch, 230 pts, 1000Steve, 215 pts, 0.934
Jack, 180 pts, 0.734
Mike, 140 pts, 0.608
Gerry, 140 pts, 0.608
Jimmy, 135 pts, 0.586Dave, 130 pts, 0.565
Chris, 60 pts, 0.260Curtis, 45 pts, 0.173
These scores are the minutes totaled and the totaled landing points added at the end.
We also had many club members spectating an a few visitors. Thanks to everyone who flew and those who helped, flying and otherwise.
Regards, Dave
