July 2006 Club Activities

Club "Ladder" Contest

Every time we hold a ladder contest, we fly a lot. The rules are still not in writing and need to be, but for the most part we all just launch and land as many times as we can to get to the next rung. Not a good day for lift today (02JL06) as the best times were in the 11 minute range (26 minutes is a really good day).
It takes a "Special Guy" to run the winch when everyone else is flying trying to get the next rung. We do not use timers in this event so all pilots can fly at once if the frequency is open. Because we use dedicated frequencies at our field for club members, club contests are usually conflict free.
New guy and expert flyer of all kinds of RC stuff, Mike Wallo flew a scale slope plane in the high winds today and did quite well.

Mid-America Electric Fun Fly

A bunch of us went to the fun fly at the Midwest Club field on 5 mile and Beck to fly in the electric sailplane "all up-last down" contest (only contest of the day here). It is generally a power-plane type of event and many good looking scale and acro electrics were there. Everything from the best of scale to 100 mph plus jets to overpowered foamies had a go at it. It was perfect day and a lot of flying was done.
Steve Martinez trying to figure out if he can get 30 LiPo's into his little jet. This is one of the fantastic 100mph+ ships that flew. Unlimited verticle and a sound that is really great, it really sounds like a full scale going by.
No reason to show this plane other than it is one of my favorites and an example of how far electric power has come since the days of speed 400's on 6 NiCd's.

This is Wolfgang Ludwig's tent, too bad the other club members will not let him use it. Hutch led Dennis and Ron on the plan to keep Wolf so busy he would not have time to set down.
Another fantastic scale job. Notice Ken Bates in the background with the big camera lens. Ken is coming back into sailplanes from a little time-out to do family stuff. Ken took first place in "AULD" while Iafret took second and Hutch took third.
Steve and Ken there to help out. If it was not for Steve helping me in "AULD", I would have done poorly.

GLASS MSL CONTEST

Ken Bates, Barb Robinson, Bob Robinson and Larry Storie getting ready for Sunday's contest. I think all of these fine people flew on Saturday also. Hutch, Steve, Ken and myself went over for Sunday.
View of 1/2 of the pit area. Not a large turnout but it was a very nice day. Lift was not easy to find and it was a tough contest as if you did not hook up, you came down way early.
The Lansing group has purchased two new super retrievers. The timer just stands on a pedal after the pilot pings and the bail picks up the line and it comes back at a nice pace with no noise or fuss. Worked great all day.
Mike Stump. One of the best around and the guy that got LSF back onto a good financial footing when it was basically broke.  He maybe leading the MSL this year and he really is a good stick.
