March 2006 Club Activities

February was not a good month to fly because of the weather, the couple of times we did get out, we either did not fly because of the wind or other problems. Not only that, I forgot my camera.

Now March is starting to shape up just fine. Some of the ORF's went out March 1st and had a good time then on the 5th we had a real club contest. The 5th had the best air I have flown in ever, no wind and thermals all over the place that just kind of stayed in one place. If you got to "I can't see the stab" height (not too difficult), lift seemed to be everywhere. I did get few photos at the contest but was so busy flying, not too many.

Jim Fetterly has helped me get the photos down to size for those with dial-up so that should be a help.

Flying at Addison Oaks in Early March
The Prez getting ready on the 1st for a fun day of e-launched sailplane fun-flying.
Mike Holmes getting his Poly Pulsar ready to find lift. Mike is really into the electric sailplane thing is having a great time now that he has a motor that keeps running.
Getting ready for the March contest with winch-launched sailplanes. I think about a dozen guys showed up and flew until their neck's were sore. We went home tired and happy.
The Marcicki men (well, one of them). Gerry was the CD for the day and called best 20 min flight of the day. Everyone got the 20 minutes and some got it many times.
The Prez again (notice the kissing up here) with his new highly modified Edge. He thinks he can beat the Kid Marcicki with this new war-bird.
Dick Stratton went so high today, he got a nose bleed (the plane, not him). At one time there must have been five or six planes in one thermal at spec height. One had to keep you eye on the target at all times.
Mike did not fly in the winch-launched contest but flew the Pulsar before the contest started and skied out. He was the usual nice guy and stayed around all day and helped by launching and timing. Very nice of him.
Last shot for the contest, my Paragon after 100 minutes of air time in three hours. "Paragon's Forever"
March Club Meeting
Bob Dukert will continue with the Wednesday night flying sessions this year starting in May. These sessions are for newbe training and practice sessions for those that think they know how to fly.
March club meeting, normal pre-meeting BS about planes, electric motors and many other esoteric subjects.
Wolf telling us about what a winding is on the hand built outrunners.
Barney is deep into many aspects of flight. He is experimenting with a hawk (Red Tail, I think) that will use electrics to get up and then turn into a thermal machine. Not sure if it flaps or not but if it does I think Barney will be truly surprised. Just hope he does not fly it in mating season.
Jack Iafret wondering what this little motor from Niagara Frontier Models will put out. I will give an update as soon as testing is done.
Field Cleaning and Fun Flying
This is the supervision crew, they were there to work all day (except Hutch who as a retired teacher can not work past noon by contract). The good news is that this group of ORF's had to do very little as the Parks people had a group of CSS people assigned to them that day and took the worry of a heart attack away from the ORF's.
As you can see, one worker and five supervisors. Good ratio.
The worker. Hutch always gives encouragement.
Here comes the heavy equipment. The mud this day was deep in spots so we all had to be careful driving in, some chose to park in the south lot and walk in.
Hutch hard at work
Just to give you an idea of the size of this chipper. It was just one mean machine when going and just a little scary.
Your webmaster getting ready to fly the new "Cosmotech" motor that I showed at the last club meeting (see above set of photos). It is awesome in the Pulsar going up as good if not better than my hand wound outrunner on 3P PQ 1500's. I was only using 8XGP 1100's in this setup. It is definitely a winner.
Dennis Kozak had fun all day and has a hanger full of stuff to play with. The lift was great today and we all had a great time but Dennis seemed to enjoy the day more than the rest of us.
Hutch helping Keith (the parks work supervisor and head nice guy). Keith did a great job today keeping the
March 29th Fun Fly
The normal view of the day, everyone looking up. Today was just fantastic with lift all over and very strong, so strong it was hard getting down at times. The planes became very small very quickly and one had to be careful if you were up with 400 size electric launch F5J ship. We flew both winch launch and electric launch today and had a ball with both,

We did an impromptu F5J two round MOM contest with 5 pilots and that really got the juices going. We will do a lot more of this this summer. This is what I have missed for a long time at our field, not being able to launch five or six at once to have MOM events and now it is possible and I for one am excited again.

Steve Martinez (our VP) trying to keep the little guy in site.
Do you think Mike Wade is happy? He has a refurbished 'Duck' and in thermal heaven.
Dick Stratton has the winched back to "Super Winch" status and the retriever is now silky smooth. Thanks Dick.

He and Hutch are taking a break after spending a lot of time in the air. Dick hit the first thermal today and skied out so high his whole plane looked no more than the size of half a stab ---- scary high.

Dennis getting ready for the F5J challenge. Dennis is a bank of battery knowledge if you need help.
