Trip to the Pumpkin Fly

Several of us try to make to the Pumpkin Fly in Cincinnati every year. Sometimes we do not because of bad weather, but this year was a positive with Mike Wade, Hutch, Dave Corven and Jack Iafret making the journey.

The Cincinnati guys put on a really good contest and have the Seeded MOM format down to a science. They usually fly at least six rounds a day of 10 to 20 minute duration making it a real soaring contest. On Saturday they also do a deep fried turkey lunch that is really good if you can find time to eat with all the flying going on.

This contest is kind of low key because the MSL and OVSS leagues are over for the year so this contest is just as much a social gathering as it is keen competition. Don't forget all of us flew all summer so we should all be sharp and well trained, yea right!

The high winds and unseasonably warm temperatures made this a year to remember. It pushed 25 mph on Sunday and 90 degrees which is really out of character for this time of year.

The Michigan contingent which included Martin Doney and Dennis Hoyle as well as our group did not fair very well this time. Usually we come home with some wood, but not this year.  Hopefully next year will be different.

Our group was all bushed by the time Sunday PM rolled around and we all had five or six hours of driving so we split before the awards were given out.

All the photos below are from Saturday.

Martin Doney is a great guy and drove nine hours from the "middle of nowhere" in Michigan to do battle with the best of the mid-west.
Hutch being Hutch. We all had a good time and laughed a lot for the three days we were there.
Mike Wade trying to make sense of Hutch's story.
Dennis Hoyle is running for VP of LSF, give him your vote on the LSF web site.

Dennis is becoming a good stick and is becoming one of the guys to beat.

Two of the best. Steve Siebenaler (LT) and Mark Gellart (RT). Steve is the CD and I think took second on Saturday and Mark took first. Mark has been the NATS Soaring Event Director for the last several years.
I did not get his name but he is new to the sport  and entered his first contest with a Gentle Lady. Even though he got the very famous "DFL" trophy he laughed and had a good time both days.

Not many "experts" would have flown a GL in these winds and taken it home in one piece. Keep up the spirit, it is great.
