September 2007 Club Activities

September Club Contest

Check out the "Contest Results" for August and the one for September for a short write-up on these two contests.

Because of a rain out last month we flew the August club contest after the September club contest so you will have to read both results to get the whole day's action. Or you can click here to view each month- August   -   September.

Seems like Mike Wade needed a little rest between rounds. You can ask him why.
Mike seems to have recovered well and is ready to do battle with his Duck.
Hutch and George are contemplating the solid blue sky and trying to figure out where to launch, at least George is.
My Supra ready to go. This plane is just fantastic to fly and land, it is my opinion (along with many others) that this ship is a quantum leap up from the past world beater for normal pilots. Other ships in the hands of the right guy may be just as good but not everyone can fly them - this is where the Supra comes in, it is very easy to fly well.
Sept. 5th ORF's at Play
Barney coaching Jack on landing the E-Graphite II after a long flight in a sky that was up all over. It was a fantastic day and all of us (about 10-12) flew until we were plain exhausted. We started at 10am and finished after 5pm and flew almost continuously.

The heat (90 degrees +) and high humidity made it tiring but I got to tell you, when the lift is this good, you fly, and fly, and fly!!!!!

All set up, Flaps-down and ready to ease her in.
2007 MSL Finals
Hutch, our wonderful CD. His contests run smoothly and all the contestants seem happy so maybe all the detail he worry's and frets over is worthwhile.

Maybe his style is the way to go as we all have fun and no protests (well Rich is not here).

Let me be the 100th person to say this, Wolf is the greatest "contest cooker-outer" in the world! His burgers and bratwursts are the best. He and daughter Emily did the honors with help from Bill Bennett and Charlie.
The two stars of the food team. Wolf and Emily, not only is she cute, she is hard working, she is talented and she very nice. Wolf is not too bad either.

Must be something about the Oak and the acorn.

Cal Posthuma and Jim Gliniecki discussing the weather and the flying strategy for the day. Look's like the strategy is laid back to me.
Harry "LSF" DeBoer with his Super AVA. Harry always is a blast to be around, he is full of energy and a first rate competitor.
Well, do you know this guy? Hint: He is one of the original members of the GDSHS and one great sailplane pilot. He moved to Kitty Hawk a few years ago after retirement from Chrysler.

For you newbie's it is Warren Tiehart who stopped by to say HI on his way to see the grandkids. He had his son Eric with him and I think Eric really liked the progress sailplanes have made since he last flew them about 20 years ago I would guess.

We old timers had a very nice visit and Warren is getting back into sailplanes after a long stint in CL Vintage Stunt.

Hutch detailing the rules of the day to Dennis while Dave Corven gets his ship ready for battle.
Dennis Kozak on his way back from a nice flight.
Jack Wallner launching with Ken Bates timing. Jack had some really great rounds and is one of those really positive people and makes you smile no matter what mood you are in.
Your webmaster doing the scoring duties from inside our equipment shed.
What a shot, Ken giving his plane a "What-For" on launch. Either that or he is just catching fly's.

Notice the clothing in mid-September as I write this it is almost 90 degrees on 07OC07, we have had really high temps for a week now but it will cool down in a day or two.

What do you suppose Hutch is thinking? Why is this flag growing from the top of my head? Or, I pray that the flag on top of my head does not mark me as a conservative.
A few of the arrows ready to be shot into the air.
The Corven twins getting a max. Chris (the one on the left) is moving back to Michigan from AZ and we will be glad to have him. Chris is a good stick and should do well at the MSL contests.

So far this year we have seen Chris, Jeff Merlik and Eric Tiehart for the first time in many years. The three of them were the child stars of soaring in years gone by.

Dick Stratton ran the winches all day for the club. He was very inviting as you can see here. A lot of work from one of the clubs most active members.
Ray Milio say's good-bye to the Gneisses, one of the best things to happen to Ray in a long time. Now he can get an up-to-date ship to play with. Think 'Supra', Ray!
Ken Bates trying to help me find thermals. If I would only listen.

Ken is another guy back from a long time away from flying sailplanes. He is one great flyer and designer of sailplanes.

Guess what? A the end of the day, Wolf and his crew were still at it. He had food and drink all day for the battle weary  pilots.
